9th December 2023
COP28 side event at the UN Climate Change Pavilion
“We are all ice dependent species”
“We need to respect the oceans and take care of them as if our lives depended on it -because they do.” — Dr Sylvia Earle / GlobalChoices, Mission Blue, UN Climate Change Pavilion.

The global impact the loss of Polar ice will have on the oceans, with the cascade effects of sea level rise, acidification and loss of a unique ocean biome will be catastrophic. Consequences of further ice loss will affect not only climate stability but disproportionately impact vulnerable Island States and coastal dwellers. Investing in the protection of the frozen ocean is therefore a must.

To discuss what we can do, we had in person world renowned oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle and a panel of distinguished guests including Baroness Patricia Scotland, Sec. General The Commonwealth, Hon Ralph Regenvanu, Minister of Climate Change, Energy and Environment, Government of Vanuatu, Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor in Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam, Tiago Pitta e Cunha, CEO Oceano Azul Foundation, Xiye Bastida, Arctic Angel and co-founder of Re- Earth Initiative, Pam Pearson Director of the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative. Moderated by Inge Relph, Executive Director and co-founder Global Choices.

“For the sake of all species, that includes humankind, we must raise the ice crisis to the top of the political agenda, require world leaders to radically and urgently cut emissions now and to protect what we can of the Central Arctic Ice Shield with a 10 year Moratorium on exploitation of this unique and critical biome…. we can’t plant ice.“ – Inge Relph Executive Director and co-founder of GlobalChoices
